A native of Washington D. C., Dr. Rice pursued an undergraduate major in Philosophy and pre-medical studies at Clark University in Worcester Massachusetts. He then returned to Washington and earned both a Bachelor of Science in Physiology and his M.D. degree at Georgetown University.
Dr. Rice’s year long Internship in Medicine at the Washington Hospital Center was followed by a three year Ophthalmology Residency at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
During his residency, Dr. Rice developed a major interest in glaucoma diagnosis and treatment. He was privileged to be the first doctor to take a Glaucoma Fellowship with Dr. Robert C. Allen, a pioneer in the medical and surgical treatment of Glaucoma.
